7 Steps to Document Damage After Hurricane Melissa

As insurers typically allow a 30-day window to submit claims following an incident or disaster, property owners whose insured homes or businesses were affected by Hurricane Melissa are being urged to act promptly. The documentation of damage is essential to ensure that property owners secure the compensation they are entitled to and to ensure that rebuilding efforts can begin without delay.

Kerry Scott, Head of Real Estate and Properties at JN Properties, which manages more than 130 properties across Jamaica, recommends the following steps:

Be aware of loose nails, broken glass, hanging wires, and displaced sheets of zinc that could cause injury. Avoid entering unstable areas and wait for professional assistance if necessary. Wear protective gear such as sturdy footwear, gloves, and helmets, and avoid inspections in poor lighting conditions.
2. Document the Extent of Damage – Carefully assess and document all damage to the property. Capture photographs and videos of both the interior and exterior, using wide shots for overall context and close-ups for specific areas. Video recordings provide additional perspective, which help insurers and contractors understand the full scope and scale of the damage.
3. Narrate Video Recordings– When recording videos, describe what is being shown and highlight areas of significant damage. This helps insurers and contractors accurately assess the severity of the impact and reduces the chance of disputes regarding the extent of the damage.
4. Prepare a Detailed Inventory – Create a comprehensive list of all damaged items. Include brands, model numbers, and serial numbers where possible. Gather receipts, warranty documents, or proof of purchase if available. Group items into categories such as appliances, furniture, or electronics to make the claims process easier and help prioritise repairs or replacements.
5. Submit Documentation Promptly – Submit all documentation, including photos, videos, receipts for temporary repairs, and completed claim forms to the insurance company. Respond quickly to any requests for additional information to prevent delays in processing claims.
