Using Sandbags to Protect Property During Storms

When heavy rain threatens, one of the simplest yet most effective tools property owners can use are sandbags. Sandbags remain a frontline defence against water intrusion and can help minimise property damage during severe weather.

Flooding is often the most immediate and destructive consequence of storms. Water can enter homes and businesses through doors, windows, and low-lying entry points, damaging floors, walls, furniture, and electrical systems. Sandbags act as a temporary barrier, redirecting water away from vulnerable areas.

Kerry Scott, head of real estate and properties at JN Properties Limited and property management expert noted that sandbags are a cost-effective and versatile in flood preparedness.

“Sandbags may seem simple, but when deployed correctly, they can help to protect property from flood damage. Taking a few proactive steps before a storm can save thousands in repairs and help families recover faster,” he said.

Mr Scott shared the following tips on how to usesandbags effectively to minimise flooding:

  1. Place them at entry points
Place sandbags at doors or at any other entry point where water can seep in. Stack them in a staggered and brick-like pattern to create a solid wall that water must flow around.

  2. Line with plastic sheeting
For added protection, lay a sheet of plastic under and over the sandbag wall. This helps prevent water from seeping through gaps between the bags.

  3. Fill properly
Fill bags about half to three-quarters full. Overfilled bags are difficult to handle and may not form a tight seal, while underfilled bags may collapse under water pressure.
  4. Prepare in advance
During a storm, sand and bags can become scarce. Keep pre-filled or ready-to-fill sandbags stored in a dry area so you can deploy them quickly when needed.
  5. Maintain safety
Avoid placing sandbags where they might obstruct emergency exits or access points. Also, ensure the area around sandbags is stable to prevent tripping hazards.

Once the water recedes, remove sandbags promptly to prevent mold and mildew from forming. Sand and bags can be reused after proper cleaning and drying.
